General Insurance FAQs

What are the advantages to using an agent to purchase insurance?

By using an agent to purchase insurance, the policyholder receives more personal service. An agent with whom there is direct contact can be vital when purchasing a product and necessary when filing a claim. A local, independent agent can deliver quality insurance with competitive pricing and local personalized service.

Should I package my home and auto insurance with the same insurance carrier?

Yes! Most carriers offer a discount on both your Home and Auto insurance if they are packaged with the same carrier. Also, in the event of a claim, where Home and Auto coverages may be involved, one carrier handling the event is going to be more convenient for you and the insurance carrier.

When is it time to update my coverage?

A Personal Insurance Review (PIR) is recommended once a year, or anytime you have significant events or changes in your life (change in marital status, new baby, starting a home business, home improvements, purchasing of jewelry, antiques, computer equipment or other expensive items) it's time to think about updating your coverage.

What's a deductible?

A deductible is the amount you pay, out-of-pocket, before your insurance coverage begins to pay.

Will my insurance premium go up if I make a claim?

This depends on your recent claims, loss ratio, and all claims you have had in the past.  At-fault claims usually result in lost discounts (claims free, safe driver) and potential surcharges on premiums. Consult your agent as each scenario is unique and may or may not impact your premiums.

Why does my premium go up, even though I haven’t had any claims?

An increase in losses and claims drives the need for increased pricing across the board for insurance providers.

Why won't insurance repaint my entire car or replace all my siding when only a portion is damaged?

Most insurance contracts will limit coverage for only the items that are directly damaged by a loss.  This is done in order to keep premiums affordable and still put you whole to your prior status.
